PCI requirement to show encryption - get a plan!

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

PCI audit - the auditor wants to SEE the encryption.

Not just verify that KEYS exist, not test backup and restore, with and with out keys.

He wants to see the data on tape using OS commands, and then see what it looks like once keys are deleted.

Do you know your OS commands to write data to tape and read it back? I did 10 years ago, lol...

Maximize Tape Utilization in Backup Exec 2014 - DELL PV 124T (LTO5)

I need a solution

Hi,

I have noticed for one of our newer BE servers that tapes aren't being fully utilized.

LT00006 - used from Dec 19 to Dec 27 (983GB out of 1.39TB)

LT00007 - used from Dec 29 to Jan 6 (630GB out of 1.39TB)

LT00008 - used from Jan 5 to present (365GB out of 1.39TB)

How can I make sure that tapes get full first before the backup jobs move on to the next blank tape?

This is a DELL Powervault 124T with only 1 Tape drive and 16 tape slots.

I need a solution

Bonjour

nous vendons Backupexec pour de petites structures et ce même depuis l'époque "veritas"...

cepandant ces derniers temps nous rencontrons de plus en plus de problèmes sur avec les nouvelles infrastructures

Donc nous achetions jusqu'à présent BE 2014 SBE

on regrette windows server sbs maintenant on regrette symantec...

Merci de fournir une VRAI solution pour les petite structures ou l'on achete UNE licence et basta

SAN Media server on SPARC hosting Solaris 10 global zone

I need a solution

We have two SPARC T-series hosting Solaris 10 Global zones, each with around 10TB of data.

On NetBakcup 7.6 side, we have several 5220 Appliances connected to LAN and SAN fabric. However, as per the old design the backup data transport for SPARC local zones is happening over the LAN, which is sometimes painfully slow specially for full backups.

My questions are,

1) can these SPARC T-series hosts with Solaris 10 Global zones be turned into SAN Media servers? and what does it require? OR keep it simple and,

2) Configure the SPARC T-series Solaris Global Zone hosts as SAN client ?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Backup Exec 2014 SCL Update for VMware

$

Please Update the SCL of Backup Exec 2014 for VMware.

There is clearly missing a note that although dynamic MBR Partitions are supported, the volume can still not be larger than 2TB.

The reason for that is the fact that Backup Exec 2014 is still using the VDDK 5.1U2 for backing up virtual VMware machines. In the release notes of VDDK 5.1 is a note that there are problems with accessing data from a volume which are larger than 2TB.

Please put a note in the SCL for the dynamic MBR section of VMware backups, that volumes larger 2TB don't have GRT support.

information related to AIR

I need a solution

I need some information related to AIR(auto image replication)

In my environment, we have SLP configured @originating server(backup job, a replication job) and on target server(Import job) with same name of SLP. I wanted to confirm process flow how it would be?
1. Backup  - Originating
2. Replication-originating
3. Import - Target

After this AIR is completed successfully i.e. now we have backup image on two locations.
1.Can we restore directly to clients from target image as well?
2.I know only one command to check status of these jobs: nbstlutil stlilist -u

Is there a procedure defined that target must be disk only? target server where import job will be running should have disk storage attached?(Is it restricted?)

I see a scenario where on originating server we see backup job and a duplication job. Is that related to SLP as well.

Last but not least what is relation of MSDP with AIR? is AIR bound to MSDP only?

NetBackup OpsCenter admin user password lost

I need a solution

Hope everyone had a good break and enjoying in the new year. Our came with an ice storm and -27C temperatures!

We had to change our backup system passwords due to an unavoidable situation and somehow did a typo when changing the password for NetBackup OpsCenter (7.6.0.3 on Windows server 2003) admin account. Although the system is running OK and reports are being generated and other users can login, I cannot login to do admin tasks. I'm also planning to move it to a Windows 2012 server and need to recover the password before I can start the move.

What are the options in this situation? Does Symantec support have a solution for this? I do have backups for the server going back before the change and if someone can point me where OpsCenter stores the local account information, I could try restoring those file(s) too.

Thanks in advance.

Backup procedures

I need a solution

We have recently decided to switch from a tape based backup plan that used a new tape for a full backup daily. We are looking to swap to external SSD's doing a weekly full and a daily incremental. Swapping out drives weekly. My question is can I set this up in a way that puts the full backups in one folder that only overwrites during the next full job and the incrementals in another so that the incrementals dont overwrite the weekly full but overwrite themselves. I hope that makes sense.

I think I can do this by creating the jobs and then creating a policy but I am not sure.

Any help would be great.

BE2014 "CatError_servername.log" file is large

I need a solution

I have stumbled aroung the Interweb for a while but can't seem to find a good answer so I am posting here.

We have a BackupExec 2014 server that is running a bit low on C: drive space. With some searching I have found the following file: "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs\Catalog\CatError_BACKUPSVR.log", to be at 7.6GB. Is this a file that I can move or delete from C: to recover disk space? There are other files in that folder as well with names like "CatLog_Audit_SQL_BACKUPSVR_Longstringofnumbers" and "CatLog_SQL_BACKUPSVR_Longstringofnumbers", but all of those show as 0KB.

Thanks!

Mike

Hello everybody

Today, I have question about compression rate of Sym BACKUPEXEC 2012. My comapany used this version for backup operator daily( backup VirtualMachine and Virual Disk ) and set compression type is " software" . Example I need backup total 12 VMs but when I read backup job then

  • backup VM 1 used compression rate is : 1.9 :1
  • backup VM 2 used compression rate is : 1.5 :1

That's mean doesn't used same compression rate.
