Backup Exec 2014 - V-79-57344-38747 on Active Directory GRT backup

I need a solution

Media server is Windows Server 2008 R2 running HyperV
Backup Exec 2014 VRay edition (uninstall/reinstall from 2012)
4 VMs (AD, SQL, Exchange, terminal server) all have RAWS 14.1.1786 installed

Getting the following exception on the Server 2008 R2 VM that is the AD controller.

V-79-57344-38747 - Backup Exec was unable to prepare Microsoft Active Directory resources for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) operations.  Therefore you will be unable to perform GRT-enabled restores of Microsoft Active Directory data from this backup.

Did not get this with 2012. All VSS writers are in a stable state. I looked +/- 60 minutes in the event viewer and I don't see any errors.

Thanks for any input.

Old Backup Jobs

I need a solution

We are slowly moving our servers to 2008 and 2012. As a result our old Symantec BackupExec 12 cannot be used. We have purchased 2012 for our new backup needs. What I would like to do is completely uninstall 12 and install a fresh copy of 2012 ... I love clean slates. Before I do this, I need to know if something were to happen, God forbid, before I get full backups on the new software, would I be able to do a restore from the old backup files. All of these files were created from 12 as backup to disk jobs. Appreciate any help/advice and will give more info if needed.

Thanks ...

Oracle RMAN restore with single non-multiplexed tape and multiple channels

I need a solution

Hello,

We take backups to datadomain then duplicate it usgin SLP to tapes. Now we have huge database to restore from the tape. DBAs are triggering restores and only one stream is using the tape, other are waiting for the same tape.

Restore is crawling data is being read from one stream that also with very slow speed. I was aware that after netbackup 6.5 multiple channels can restore from single tape in one read.

What could be the reason behind this. If question is not clear let me know.

restore VMware guest with GRT

I need a solution

Hello,

I understand if a VMware guest is restored using GRT from a tape drive. Backup Exec will restore first the vmdk file to a temporary directory on the media server and thereafter restore the files.

Does it mean if the VM guest has a 500GB vmdk the media server needs at least 500GB free space? I also guess the restore time will take some time.

I also understand that using a fixed disk as a backup location the vmdk file will be directly accessed and no temporary space is needed. It will also reduce the restore time drastically.

Is this right what I'm saying? We are using Backup Exec 2012 and I think even with BE 2014 nothing as change in terms of restore a vmdk with GRT.

Thanks,

Edy

Have Backup Exec support Overland Storage NAS products

Have Backup Exec support Overland Storage NAS products.  They use a proprietary Linux OS known as Guardian OS.  We have already been using Backup Exec on this NAS, but it is annoying trying to open a case and the engineers say the hardware is not supported.

Admin console on OPSCenter server? Order?

I need a solution

So, I'm building me a new opscenter server, and it's up and running OK.  NetBackup 7.5.0.6

THEN I think to myself, I'd like a windows Admin Consosle on this box (windows server 2008, R2)

Well, you need the server install for Admin Console, so the latest one for 7.5 is 7.5.0.4 - the rest are just updates - (could be wrong)

But it won't let me install cause I have a 7.5.0.6 opscenter on..   says what I'm trying to install is older than what I have on.

Did I do this in the wrong order?

Why the backup jobs failed with robotic library is not available  (2059)

Please find the following logs:

as Library side and robtest running good.

Drive configuration and tpconfig/vmoprcmd/tpautoconf -t can detect the drive looks good.

What are the steps i need to cover to check this type of problem please suggest.

Backup Exec 2014 fails to Backup VM with GRT Enabled

I need a solution

Greetings-

I am testing out BE2014 and trying to backup a VM that is in a different domain than the BE2014 server using GRT for Active Directory.  It seems no matter what I do I cannot get the job to run unless the logon account is an administrator of the domain that the BE2014 Server is in.  The problem here is that obviously I get a warning that GRT restores are not possible when I backup this way as this logon account has no rights in the domain of the server (VM) that I am backing up.

The minute I change the Logon account for the VM to an admin account to the domain that the VM is a part of, the backup job fails with an error saying that the logon account does not have sufficient privilages.

Has anyone gotten this scenario to work?  I used to be able to do it in BE2012 and it was pretty straightforward.  Which account\admin needs to be specified as the logon account when you are making VM selections under the VMware host?

Thanks

Back Up Exec 2014 & Flat File BU of files on SAN

I need a solution

Hello All,

I have installed BE2014 and was looking to make a "Copy" of files on a drive.

Here is the configuration.

Physical Host for BE2014, and additional 3.6TB of storage space for Back up to disk if needed & a Tape Library (Not configured just yet)

Windows HyperV Host 2008R2 64Bit C: Drive physical, D Drive with Guest OS, located on EqualLogic SAN

Guest OS Windows Server 2008 C: However the D: Drive where the files are located is on the SAN as well

A section of the SAN was carved out for the Files to be stored. anISCSI connection is made form teh guest to the SAN area for the D: Drive.

With BE2014 I was looking to make a "Copy" of these files for Offsite back up to tape.

The option I am told for "Full-Copy" like BE2010 no longer exists, only Full, and Incremental.

If I do either a full, or incremental back up on that drive, located on the SAN, it will change the archive bit, and in effect change EVERY FILE, and when the next scheduled snapshot on the SAN occurs, it would be catastrophic in the amount of reserved space it youd use for the snapshots. in effect filling the SAN most likely, if not, close to filling it.

With what Symantec called "Flat File BackUp" no longer existing, how would anyone back up files off a SAN (EqualLogic in this case) without wreakign havoc on the snapshots?

Any help would be great, without this option (Full-Copy) , Im kind of stuck on how to get the needed files copied off the SAN, without messing it up.

Thanks Aaron

I need a solution

Dear Crowd,

I am running Symantec System Recovery on an HP Elite Notebook with Windows 7 and an SSD-Harddrive.

While trying to create a system recovery point I was getting the following error message:

(UMI:V-0-187-131)

Roughly translated this says:

"-Creation of an incremental recovery point is not possible.

-- Error E7C3000F: Device \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2 cannot read 1.088 sectors beginning with LBA 54.394.784

-- Error EBAB03F1: The following operating system error has occurred while performing the requested operation. 'The request could not be performed due to an I/O-device error.'

Five days ago the program worked just fine.

What can I do about this?

Best regards, Thomas

NetBackup 7.5 - Job Configuration Question

I need a solution

Hello All:

Well, our backup admin quit and this role landed in my lap. I have backup exec experience but no NetBackup. Here's my situation. We backup about 20 TB a week in fulls and probably a 1/4 of that in diffrentials. About 30-35 servers. Overland Neo4000 - 50 slots, 4 LTO 5 drives. Personally, I think netbackup is overkill for what we're doing but I'm stuck with it and need to learn and get it configured to my liking as quickly as possbile.

We dump our databases to flat files on disk and backup from there. The rest is straight to tape. I just need to get this configured for performance without getting overly complicated. Not worried about retention periods etc etc. We pull the tapes every Monday for offsite storage.

My first task that I can't seem to figure out is how to run one job to 1 drive. I've noticed that I have a few larger jobs that tied up all 4 drives for a substantial period of time causing everything to queue up behind it. So for now, I'd like to get 1 job per drive. This way the larger jobs won't hold up the smaller ones from running.

I've deselcted multiplexing and deselected allowing multiple streams and still get 1 job running across multiple drives. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Upgrade BE2012 to BE2014 Windows Agents

I need a solution

We are in the process of renewing our maintenance agreement for BE server and VMware esxi. My question is, if maintenance is up to date on the server, do I have to pay for maintenance on the Windows agents (which I currently have 7) to upgrade those? or is the agent upgrade included on the free upgrade I have seen posted (as long as I have maintenance on the BE server)?

Will I have to insert a new 'serial' number for the agents, as I will for the server?

NetApp NDMP backups and Accelerator

I need a solution

Hi

Problem trying to solve : Backing up a growing 15 TB NetAPP CIFS share volume volume that already contains 100 million files, its taking ~ six days.

Currently backup throughput for remote NDMP is very slow ~20 MB/s, my NetApp buddies say they would expect this given the large number of files in the volume plus direct NDMP to local attached tape drives will not help.  Backups are to DDBOOST enable Data Domain kit, tape are out of the question as thew backup is too slow.

Looking at the prospect of using NBU Accelerator to speeds things up by:

  • Mounting the CIFS share on media server
  • Setting up a NBU Accelerator policy to back this up.

Problems & Assumptions

Usually when I have encountered large volumes with squillions of files on an NDMP mount on boxes found it better to do an NDMP backup because regular filesystem backups can timeout.  Spent a lot of time tuning systems for regular backups only to have them repeatedly fail due to timeouts because on directories that contain a huge number of files.  This may exclude the use of NBU Accelerator.

I am assuming that mounting the CIFS volume on media can be read-only and will have no impact on the functionality of  NBU Accelerator. I could see info on this in the manual and other sources like  - Frequently Asked Questions on NetBackup Accelerator Part II

There is no mention of Accelerator in the NetApp Replication Manager plug-in guide.  So it appears the plug-in is not relevant.

SQL 2008 compressed backup waste 50% of tape size

I need a solution

I have tapes assigned for backup policies of SQL 2008 databases, the backed up databases are compressed with the compression option in SQL 2008 server.

the problem is that the tapes used for these SQL databases backup reaches full status when it's about 50% of the actual size of the tape.( Example : 1.6 TB tapes are full when it contains about 700 GB).

i don't understand what is the reason of this behavior, while this problem didn't appear when i was using databases backup from SQL 2000 server or normal Flat files backup. it takes the whole tape size (almost 1.6 TB).

So, Kindly i need your help with this issue that waste almost 50% of my tapes size

Cannot solve this problem
