Restore to different server doubles path

I need a solution

I wanted to restored a directory from tape with Backup Exec 2012 SP4 on Windows Server 2008 R2 to a different server with identical directory structure. The end result was that the entire path in front of the restored folder was doubled. Specifically:

  • backed up server ERDE.ARTEGIC.LOCAL directory E:\SILO\Staff\svl\#private\BACKUP
  • tried to restore to server ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL directory E:\SILO\Staff\svl\#private\BACKUP
  • selected \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\ as destination
  • job log says:
Restoring data to \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\SILO\Staff\svl\#private
Detailed information
(Directory \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\)
Directory \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\SILO
Directory \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\SILO\Staff
Directory \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\SILO\Staff\svl
Directory \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\SILO\Staff\svl\#private
Directory \\ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL\E:\SILO\Staff\svl\#private\BACKUP

followed by the subdirectories within the BACKUP directory, all with their correct original paths. (Note however the parentheses around the first line.)

  • however, looking on server ZAGDC01.ARTEGIC.LOCAL after the restore completed, I find the restored data is instead at
E:\SILO\Staff\svl\#private\SILO\Staff\svl\#private\BACKUP

Ie. Backup Exec has created four extra directory levels wrt its own log.

Simple question: Why???

I need a solution

Our backups have suddenly stopped working and i am unable to get back into the software. It looks like the catalog backup failed and the nbdb.log file grew and size which filled the limited space we have left on the C:/

I followed the instructions from here - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag... but when i get to the part where it asks you to run 'nbdb_admin -auto_start NONE' i get 'No database information exists in vxdbms.conf.'

I follow this article - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag... but get the message 'C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin>create_nbdb -config_only
Database server is NB_OF-UK1-BCKP-03
Ping server failed -- Database server not found.
Ping server failed -- Database server not found.
Database server [NB_OF-UK1-BCKP-03] not available.'

Hoping someone can help.

Chris

Backup Exec 2014 - SQL Collation

I need a solution

Hi, does this solution for 2012 also need to be done on 2014 version if you are using different Language on operating system ?

The SQL express database which BE installs (and any other) inherits collation settings from Language for non-Unicode programs setting (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143311(v=sql.90).aspx ). Therefore if you have some other regional setting, the SQL express database of BE inherits these setings and the BE 2012 cannot work with "non-standard" collations.

The collation of SQL Express database which i am now using is (English US) so all is OK now.

Software setting to ignore overwrite protect?

I need a solution

I have a tape drive (Ultrium 448 LTO2) that has a bad Overwrite Protection sensor.

My boss damaged the sensor trying to get a tape out, and now every job spits the media out, saying that it is Overwrite Protected even though the media is not.

Is there a way to tell Symantec Backup Exec to ignore whether media is overwrite protected until the new drive we ordered arrives?

I do not want to miss any backups if possible!

Thank you in advance for reading.

I need a solution

Hello All,

I have intsalled the BE 2014 on my test enviorment and pretty much pleased with the work done,
also have few questions:

1. since I dont have tape drive in my test machine I would like to know if old valuble feature,
right click on a tape media and see the backup content is back or not?

2. second question is about existing issue with disk based storage pools , resolved or not
(maybe its not possible for vmdk backup to continue on second disk, but does it work for normal remote agent backups)

3. May be I know this answer but just to confirm if I need to call licensing for updated license
or can I use one from 2012.

Thanks in Advance.

Stalled backups or Engine service not responding

I need a solution

I was using BE 12.5D (on 2008R2) for a few years with very few issues. I upgraded the software to 2012 SP4 and after getting used to the differences settled down to about 2 weeks of no issues. Then without making any changes to the server or software, my backups started failing. I tried resolving the problem, which most of the time was "The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding." The server wwould also restart for no apparent reason during a the backups so some of the failures were due to the backup not being able to continue from where they were interupted. I couldn't find anything in the Event Viewer to point to the problem, so I decided to do a clean install. I formatted the server, reinstalled the OS, updated it and then installed BE 2012, updated that. I then reinstalled the agents on all the servers too and restarted them to make double sure.

I created a Once-off backup of my Exchange server - Hyper V, 2008R2, Exch 2010 Std SP3. The backup got to about 3gb in size and then you could just watch the speed casually drop every 2 seconds or so, even though the size stayed at 3gb. The BE server would either restart or the job would fail with the "not responding" error.

I created a Once-off backup of a File Server - Physical, 2008R2, using DFS. The backup would initiate and then after about 10mins would stall and the same error "not responding".

I need a "fresh set of eyes" to help me here to see what I am missing. I have looked at this page:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

without any luck.

My BE server specs are:

HP DL 380 G6, 6GB RAM, 2008R2 ENT, roles: Domain Controller, DNS

Media Management Issues

I need a solution

I can’t seem to wrap my head around media management.  I have a tape library with 4 drives.  I’ve got the usual daily. Weekly, monthly jobs.  When I add new media it gets sucked up pretty quick across the 4 drives, which I’m prepared to live with.  However I have a big problem when it’s prompting me for over writeable media when I have tapes in the library with heaps of room on them.  Some tapes have as little as a gig written to them and the job won’t run because it’s looking for media!

Now I was told by Symantec that if a job spans media it can’t append to media in the same media set if any data’s on that tape, and that it can only write to scratch tape.  I just don’t’ understand that, but I’ve accepted it.  However, subsequent jobs that just start, and would have not spanned any media are also prompting me for overwriteable media as well

My storage options are to append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available and my BackupExec settings for media overwrite protection level is set to partial – protect only allocated media.

What’s going on??

I need a solution

I'm after a backup solution for my home computer/NAS and Symantec System Recovery 2014 just doesn't cut the mustard!

Does anyone know of a hack around that can make Backup Exec install on a Windows 7 machine (not the administration console, but the entire product?)

Thanks

Backup Exec 2012 R2 (now named 2014 Beta) and no valid license

I need a solution

We bought a server with a Tandberg Streamer LTO Ultrium 4 and a version of Backup Exec 2012. The server works with Windows Server 2012. Since a verly long time now Symantec promises to release a version of Backup Exec which supports server 2012 as a media server.

I was quite happy when I finally got the message, that the beta 2014 will support installation on windows server 2012. As you can read in the description of the beta it is the formerly known version Backup Exec 2012 R2.

Since Symantec announced to release a working version for Windows Server 2012 I wonder, if I now have to buy a new license?

Hello everybody,

I have an Editshare Video Server.

This Server has 71TB as complete Amount of Data.

This Data is provided via a SMB Share over the network.

How can I backup this Share without installing an agent into the Editshare OS (which doesn't allow to install any stuff that isn't from Editshare)?

Thank you very much!

Kind Regards,

Best Way to Manage Backup Destinations

I need a solution

Hello,

I've got some jobs configured in SSR. What is the best way to manage the backup destination when the disk becomes full?

When i use the Clean up tool it deletes all the recovery points, not just the old ones. What it should be doing is combining the full and incremental backups to create a new baseline kinda like how the Synthetic Backup works in BE.

Am I missing something?

Greetings.

Can someone point me to the current version of the Symantec Tech Doc listed below?

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH129112

This article worked great for Windows 7. Now I am tasked with validating the restore process for windows 8.1 and Symantec System Recovery 2013 (with sp2). The restore may to to identical hardware or if need be dissimiliar hardware.

Cheers,

Justin

Backup Exec 2014 is Now Available!

$
0
0

I am really excited to announce that Backup Exec 2014 is generally available!

What’s New in Backup Exec 2014?

  • Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 support: Backup Exec now fully supports Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • Superior visibility into backup jobs: We heard you loud and clear. The Backup Exec job monitor is back. You can monitor the status of all backup jobs from a single view, giving you visibility into the status of your backup jobs. In addition, save time and simplify the creation of backup jobs by backing up and managing multiple servers with a single backup job.
  • Simplified upgrade/migration process: Many of you asked us to simplify the migration process to the latest version. If you are using Backup Exec 12.5, 2010 or 2012 you can upgrade and keep your jobs and settings intact, simplifying the move to Backup Exec 2014.
  • Granular recovery for Exchange 2013 and SharePoint 2013: Backup Exec granular recovery technology (GRT) is now available for Exchange 2013 and SharePoint 2013. From a single-pass backup, you can quickly recover granular objects such as Exchange email and SharePoint documents.
  • Optimized performance: In our internal testing, Backup Exec 2014 has shown up to 100%[1] faster backup and deduplication speeds compared to previous versions of the software.

What about Cloud Capabilities?

Over the past several months, many of you have been asking about cloud capabilities. I’m excited to announce that Backup Exec 2014 also supports:

  • Riverbed Whitewater Appliance
  • Quantum Q-Cloud

Please stay tuned on this front - we plan to announce support for an additional cloud platform shortly.

What Are Customers Saying?

Thank you to the more than 3,700 customers and partners who registered to participate in the Beta program this spring. Below is some of the most recent feedback we’ve received:

  • “Our backups complete with near 100% reliability and restores are consistently successful with zero fuss.” – Brandon Mosak, IT Director, Task Force Tips, Inc.
  • “It Just Works!” – Terry Green, IT Manager, Autochair
  •  “I’ve used other backup solutions on a virtualized environment with varying degrees of success. But for me, the ability to back up a virtual machine image as well as the files inside it—or restore an entire virtualized application or the granular data in it, whether it’s Exchange or SharePoint or SQL—that’s what makes Backup Exec 2014 far more compelling than its competitors.” – Paul Flatt, Infrastructure and Support Manager, Mitre 10 NZ

But don’t just take their word for it, download Backup Exec 2014 today and let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing about your experience.

What’s Next?

We will continue to release service packs every 90 days, and the current target for Backup Exec 2014 Service Pack 1 is September 2014. In addition, we’ll keep you updated as we have more information to share about future product plans.

If you’d like to read more about the journey to Backup Exec 2014, check out the post from Pablo Stern, Senior vice President for Symantec Backup and Recovery, here.

Thank you for your continued support of Backup Exec.
