Fix the disk storage targeting in Backup Exec 2012

$
0
0

Backup Exec 2012 targets backup jobs to the disk with the LEAST free space in a disk storage pool. This is a severe problem for GRT jobs, which cannot span to another disk in the disk pool. When a GRT job fills up the DISK it is targeted to, Backup Exec asks you to import overwriteable media into the ROBOTIC TAPE LIBRARY (please fix this too) so the job can continue!. The only way to get these jobs to run successfully is to remove all the disks from the storage pool that are nearly full - which defeats the purpose of having a storage pool. Clearly, Backup Exec should target GRT backup jobs to the disk with the MOST free space in the disk storage pool.

Off-Host Backups VMware

I need a solution

I'm looking for some clarification on doing off-host backups for VMware using Netbackup 7.5. I have read the 7.5 VMware Admin guide.I currently have a Linux Master/Media/client as my only system. The guide says two things about the backup host:

1. It needs to be Windows with a Netbackup client 7.5 installed.

2. It needs to be able to connect to the VM Host(s) and the SAN as well as the master/media server. I can get it to connect to the VM Hosts just fine but the SAN is a Dell Equi-Logic which is serving up block iSCSC to the VM Hosts formatted as vmfs. If I add the backup host to the access group of the datastore, is that enough access?

Is that correct or am I missing something?

Also, it looks like I may need to upgrade to 7.6 to get the Windows 2012/8 clients. Would Version 7.6 make this any easier?

Thanks!

Oracle Database backup - system error occurred (130). Stumped!

Master and media servers Windows 2008r2 standard

Netbackup 7.5.0.4

Hello all.

I have run into an issue that randomly started, and of course, no one know of any changes made, including myself. I've dug into this as far as I can, including considerable phone time with Symantec support, our Oracle DBA's and our Unix team (as the server running this database is a Linux media server, to which I have no access.)

One of our Oracle databases suddently stopped backing up, showing the following error. These two lines are the entire job detail log. It doesnt even get far enough to generate a full set of logs on my end.

5/1/2014 9:04:24 PM - Error bprd(pid=3416) Unable to write progress log </usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext/logs/49349.0.1398996262> on client pdc00orao533l. Policy=APP_ORA11_OHLPROD3 Sched=Daily_Full
5/1/2014 9:04:24 PM - Error bprd(pid=3416) CLIENT pdc00orao533l  POLICY APP_ORA11_OHLPROD3  SCHED Daily_Full  EXIT STATUS 130 (system error occurred)

The file system on the server backs up fine, but different processes are used there. I kept pushing toward a permission issue, but our Unix enginneer is looking and assures me that the Oracle owns the files, and CAN write the data. His response is......

"""""[jfarrar@pdc00orao533l ~]$ ls -l /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext/logs/31013.0.1398963278

-rw-r--r-- 1 oracle dba 42 May  1 11:54 /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext/logs/31013.0.1398963278

[jfarrar@pdc00orao533l ~]$ cat /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext/logs/31013.0.1398963278

Backup started Thu May  1 11:54:38 2014

[jfarrar@pdc00orao533l ~]$

The log is clearly inaccurate because the Oracle user owns and wrote to the file.  The Oracle application cannot make a setuid assertion fail.  Rebooting a host because they can't think of anything else to try is not an option.  This is a Production system."""""""

What's causing the disagreements are statements like below in the log files, but I am being told this is not accurate.................

bpcd (on client):

12:58:22.914 [76635] <16> process_requests: can't become user oracle and group dba

12:58:22.914 [76635] <16> process_requests: setuid failed for user oracle

bprd:

11:54:40.001 [5372.4076] <2> append_to_client_log: can't become user oracle on pdc00orao533l.ohlogistics.com

11:54:40.001 [5372.4076] <8> bkarfiles: failure writing progress log on client pdc00orao533l in log /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/user_ops/dbext/logs/31013.0.1398963278:  system error occurred (130)

I looked into the possibility that inetd does not have the needed rights, and so neither would the bpcd, but bpcd is running standalone under root and has full root access.

I'm drawing a total blank at this point. The urgency is that we've been digging at this for a couple days now, and the archive log directory is filling. If it fills, it will shut down the database, and we'll have rf guns and warehouse management systems go offline nationwide. This is why they refuse to restart the client or Oracle, which I have to agree with. Of course, the database stopping is going to have the exact same effect.

Please let me know what added details I can provide.

Thank you.

Ways to optimize throughput on Linux backups to Windows 2012 NBU server?

I need a solution

I have a Windows 2012 Standard Server with 2 x 1Gbps uplinks to our network backbone.   The backup device is an external SAS single drive LTO5 drive, capable of 6Gbps throughput.   The target backup server is a RedHat 5.9 Linux Server, with a 10 Gbps uplink to our network, with a RAID10 drive set across 8 x 1TB disks.    The dataset I'm backing up is around 3TB, but the throughput on the backup job seems to only run around 30000 KBps (1.8GB/min)..

Are there any things I should do to try and increase this throghput, to get my full-pass backup window shorter?

Would I be better off doing a disk-to-disk backup, to get the data set backed up first, and then doing a disk-to-tape backup from the copied location, to offset stressing the original backup source?

Required Storage

I need a solution

We are adding a new NAS to our environment, and I have a question regarding space required for backups. Currently, I have about 10TB on a SAN connected via fiber to 3 ESXi hosts and our Server 2008 backup exec server. I have roughly  9TB of space on the BE server, which is sufficient for weekly full and daily diffs of the VMs on the SAN.

The new NAS I am putting in (or additional tray of disks to the SAN) will be 40TB of data.  This is the most I have ever backed up, and I am honestly not sure how much space I need to add to the BE server. The general plan is the 15TB will be read-only archive, the rest active data changing daily. Once a file has not been modified for 3 months, it will be moved to the archive.

SO, theoretically I will be backing the archive up straight to tape only when data is added to it. The other 25TB will require a weekly full and daily diff/inc. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I should quote storage for this? I am initially thinking a DAS with 10-12 disks 4TB each.

Still looking for AIR Cloud providers...

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

So I started a discussion back in July 2013 regarding cloud providers which might provide AIR.  Now I understand that there is no "integrated" option within NetBackup to do this, so I'm wondering if there are any service providers which "host" NetBackup domains which would allow me to, in essence, replicate to the cloud.

I currently have an appliance at a nearby facility which is starting to get tapped out and we may leave the rack space anyways.  It seems if I could find a vendor that had a "farm" of appliances and "AIR as a service" I could simply purchase sufficient dedupe capacity and replicate there...

Anyone looked into something like this?

Hi, I'm using Backup Exec 2012 SP4 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 64. I'm not sure what went wrong, but when i added the vCenter ip address, 1 of my virtual machine is not listed in the selections. And this server is very crucial to us, it's our DC.

Every single VM has been listed except for that. Need help urgently.

What happens with new files created while an image backup is running with SSR 2013?

As noted in the title...to be specific, I was ripping a CD while an image backup was running. Some 12 new files were created while the image backup was in progress.

==Are the files backed up?

--Ignored?

--Backed up if that area of the drive is not yet backed up, otherwise ignored?

---If ignored, does this otherwise affect the integrity of the backup (that is, other than just not backing up the 12 new files?)

Is it logical to create an Incremental backup schedule for a RMAN policy

I need a solution

Hi Guys,

I am planning to create a RMAN policy for DBA's.

I guess one would be Default application schedule which i need to keep 24x7 for user initiated backups.

Then there would be automatic backup schedule for backups to be triggered from NBU end.

Now,automatic would be FULL..right ? Do you think i need to create an Incremental backup schedule too ? if yes,,why ? i guess NBU's gonna pick all the data that RMAN is going to provide to it whatsover.(Full or incremantal data picked would be all).

Anybody shed some more light in DB policy schedules ?

Thanks !!!!!!

NetBackup AIR for old Backup images

I need a solution

I have implemented AIR in my existing NBU environments and it is working correctly as designed for any new backup is performed. Is there a way to get one of the old backup image (The backup which was performed to Tape prior to implementing AIR) duplicated using AIR SLP so that it can be imported in my Target Master at DR site?

My environment:

Source Master: NBU 7.5.0.6 running on RedHat Linux 5.5

Target Master: NBU 7.5.0.6 running on RedHat Linux 5.5

DataDomain (Both Sites) DDOS 5.4.0.8

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Buenos dias,

Gracias

saludos

Skipping EFS Encrypted Files in SSR 2013

I need a solution

I've recently created an EFS encrypted file, and now my F&F backups are failing completely.  I found this old thread:

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-backup-...

It's fine if SSR can't backup these files, but it is astonishing if it cannot simply skip them.  Instead, the entire F&F feature becomes useless.  This critical issue has been around for years.  I'm truly hoping that there is a solution in the latest version.  It's so simple, just skip these files!  Or give an option to skip them.  Fingers crossed, I do not want to be forced to switch to another product.

I do not see any options in the backup job to specify files or file extensions to ignore.  I do not see an option to continue on error.  Either of those would resolve this.

Serious Memory Leak in SSR

I need a solution

Every time SSR runs a backup, the "Modified" memory used increases in Windows 7 (x64) by a significant amount, and is never released.  When the F&F backup runs, the Modified memory increases by about 200MB.  When a disk backup runs, it increases by over 1GB.  I run a disk backup every 4 hours and F&F every 15 minutes.  After a few backups during the day, Windows starts to throw low memory warnings and starts to close programs automatically.

If you restart the SSR service, the "Modified" memory is immediately released and the system is back to normal until more backups run.  I noticed this issue long ago, but simply had a script to restart the SSR service each morning.  That used to be enough, but I am now running backups more often throughout the day, so the issue is more serious.  I'm having to schedule the script to restart SSR every 4 hours.  Not an elegant workaround for what seems like a serious bug.  Any solutions?
