Failed NBU 250-371 Exam Twice

I need a solution

The company I work for registered me for the 5-day Symantec NetBackup 7.5 for Windows: Administration course. I took the course and scehduled the exam for two weeks after taking the course. I've been with the company for four months. Before this job, I'd never used NetBackup or any enterprise-level backup software like it. The enviroment I work in uses a small fraction of what the product is capable of. Everything in our environment is backed up to tape using one robot with two drives. We have maybe 15 policies. Of those, we have a catalog backup, one HPUX server, 5 NDMP file systems, a couple Windows servers, and the rest are VMware virtual Windows servers.

Ever since my first exam attempt two weeks ago, I've spent every night during the week and every weekend, day and night, studying my notes from the lectures and the material Symantec provided and I still failed. What surprised me most was the number of questions not covered in the material or lectures.

Have any of you taken this exam and succeeded? What did you do to prepare? How long did you prepare? How long had you been using NBU before taking the exam? Did you take the 5-day course?

Thanks in advance.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Most mornings it takes a cup of coffee, an energy drink, or maybe a sugary treat to wake you up, but how about the roar of an Indy car engine to get you started? Stephen Hauck played backseat driver this morning with Jimmy Tyrie of the Indy Racing Experience to talk about some of the events going on this weekend.

Indy on Wake UpThe events kick off Friday at the Shops of Grand River, where you can strap into one of the cars. That starts at 5:30pm.

The race cars can go anywhere from 180-185 mph on courses like Barber’s, and all the way up to 230 mph on courses like Indianapolis.

Castroneves, who won the inaugural race at Barber Motorsports Park in 2010, placed third the past two years. Teammate Will Power (12th in the session) won the race in 2011 and ’12. Castroneves (2012) and Power (2010, 2011) earned the Verizon P1 Award the first three years.

“Winning the first race there in 2010 was a great feeling. Everyone wants to be the first to do something,” Castroneves said. “Team Penske has been pretty solid there and I expect more of the same this weekend. All three cars were quick at spring training (in mid-March at Barber) and we’ve started the year with a lot of speed. The No. 3 AAA Chevrolet was a podium car at Long Beach, but we weren’t able to close that deal. I feel like we can get the job done at Barber.”

Another 45-minute session is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT). Practice at 10 a.m. (CT) April 26 precedes the three rounds of qualifications. All Verizon IndyCar Series sessions are on IMS Radio Network in conjunction with real-time Timing & Scoring on and INDYCAR 14 app. Paul Page is the chief announcer. NBCSN telecasts taped qualifications (11:30 p.m., April 26, Central time) and the 90-lap race live (1:30-4:30 p.m., April 27). Leigh Diffey is the chief announcer.

Before the session, James Hinchcliffe of Andretti Autosport and Sebastian Saavedra of AFS KVAFS Racing, who reported injuries suffered in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 13, were re-evaluated by INDYCAR medical director Dr. Michael Olinger and cleared to drive.

I need a solution

Hi,

We have one Master and Media Server both running on Winows 2008 and Netbackup Version is 6.5.6

EMM Databse resides on Media Server, now Master Server is down due to a SAN issue and currently we are recovering SAN.

In case if we lose data on Master Server we may need to restore catalog but currently I do not know which Catalog tapes are used as mail notification was not working.

I need help, How can I get Catalog Tape information from Media Server which is running now and also any way I can browse images from Media Server?

And in case if I need to install Netbackup where can I get Netbackup 6.5.6 binaries for windows2008?

Please help how can I get information from Media Server when Master is down, any temp files from where I can get catalog tape information?

Thanks,

Abu Hamzah

Updating Java on the netbackup client.

I need a solution

Hello,
I'm updating Java on our Solaris 10, RHEL 5 and SLES 11 servers. I'm using NetBackup 7.5. The current version of the java the NetBackup is using is 1.7.0_25. The current version of Java is 1.7.0_55. The client versions are located here; /usr/openv/java/jre/bin/sparcv9/java and /usr/openv/java/jre/bin/java.

I used to use this document from this site - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH148257  This article is for an older client, which uses Java 6. Also this doesn't work on the media and master servers.

So my question is how do we upgrade Java on the clients. None of my servers have Java 7 installed, meaning a non-embedded system version. So I can't use the .nbjconf file to direct the client to the system Java.

To truly backup the backup exec. server that is on a 2012 server do I have to do what is in the article below or is a fix in SP4 that I see is ready and waiting.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH208015

When it try's to backup the server I get the can't backup a 2012 server unless you assign a drive letter to recovery partition like mentioned in the article.

Ex2010 BE 2012 SP3 DAG backup comm failure 84f9 at 405GB of 570GB

I need a solution

Recently started getting backup failures per above on one of my three mailbox databases.

At around the same time started moving some mailboxes off the 570GB DB to the second one to slim down the size. Some moves ended with warnings but the mailboxes moved. Other mailboxes moved without warning.

Also have been messing with circular logging to keep the log files down since the backups are not clearing them out.

Have rebooted both the Ex 2010 mailbox servers and the backup server. I see SP4 is applicable so installing that now.

Every 3 min am getting event 2137 log truncation failed for that database on the 2nd DAG member.

Thanks for comments.

Sending SMTP notifications in NBU 7.6.0.1 requires third party SMTP?!

I need a solution

I'm slowly learning NBU (previous CommVault user) and I'm finding a few things that are just surprising to me.

Is there really no built in way to send notifications from NBU, without installing a third party open source SMTP daemon?   Can I not even use the IIS7 SMTP service that comes with Windows Server 2012 Standard, to set up notifications?

Backing up large data set across multiple LTO tapes, on single manual drive?

I need a solution

I have a single slot LTO5 drive (3TB tape size).

If I am backing up a data set that's larger than 3TB, will NBU prompt me to insert the next tape in the Media Resource Pool, when the current tape fills?   My concern is how will I know when the data set job is ready to span multiple tapes.

I am going to be getting a tape robot in future (or move to disk-to-disk backups) but for now I need to know what my interim approach should be?

C: drive lost, but NB database still on D: - how to reinstall NB Master

I need a solution

I have today lost all hope of recovering the C: drive of my Win2008 R2 server which is the master server for my NetBackup domain. The NetBackup software and database are on the D: drive. I am going to have to format the C: drive and then install Windows and reinstall Netbackup somehow. What's the best way of doing this and pointing the Master server back at the copy of database etc that's still there? If I choose D: when I install NetBackup, will it overwrite the database that's there? Do I need to map a different volume to D:, install then map the old drive back to D:? Is there a guide I can read to work out my best option? I know whe NB database is OK, because the Windows server shutdown cleanly, but just never came back. I can see all the data is still on the D: drive too.

Thanks for any help.

NetBackup Java Activity Monitor always displays backup path

While a job is active this is displayed, but after completion or failure the information disappears and you have to look at the job details.  This would be helpful to determine which child jobs need to be rerun without examining the job details for each one.

I need a solution

Hello everybody, fisrt of all I want to thank you for helping me to solve my issues.

This time i need to setup a netbackup server global cluster distributed in 2 sites. Each site has its ip addres segment so when the service group is running in the first site clients must resolve the ip address assined in that site.

When the service group change to the second site clients must resolve the ip address for the second site.

the cluster is running and we can do the switchover from primary site to secondary and viceversa. At the dns level we have to dns records pointning to both primary and secondary sites ip addresses

The issue we are facing is we can ping to master on the site that runs the service group but not from the other, if we switch over is the same.

this is the result of nslookup and the ping does not response

the service group run in the 172.20.50.161

bash-3.00# ifconfig -a

Catalog failing with 160 then retrying and succeeding

I need a solution

I have a catalog backup that will fail with code 160, retry, and the complete.  This doesn't happen every day, it's more like every other day.  The job does run everyday.

I have split the services up between 2 different service accounts to make sure it wasn't a windows single sign on error.  I also have the DR file being stored in a different volume than the main catalog file.  Both volumes have the everyone permission applied to them.  At this point I'm at a loss as to why it fails every other day.

Exchange DB restore taking a very long time

I need a solution

I'm running Backup Exec 2012 on a Win2k8 R2 server. Today we had an issue in which 2 of the Information Store databases on one of our Exchange 2007 servers would not mount. We back up the Info Stores directly to tape using the BE Exchange Agent, monthly full backups and daily incrementals.

So, I began a restore of those two databases from Backup Exec. I first enabled the option in Exchange Management for those 2 databases that allows them to be overwritten by a restore. The size of the restore (according to BE) is around 73GB. After about 90 minutes, the job activity claimed the job was 100% complete but the job was still active. 2 hours after that and the job is still active, and the bytes processed hasn't changed since that 90-minute mark. Does a restore like this usually take that long? If not, what might be the problem? See below for a screen shot of the job activity.

Looking for NetBackup Administrators
My name is Elizabeth Teffner. I'm a Customer Research Analyst at Symantec. Our Customer Research group is organizing Customer Safaris to observe how NetBackup Administrators do their work.

What is a Customer Safari?

Customer Safari is where we come to your office and observe your day. Understanding how people work and go through their day helps us generate ideas on how we may make improvements or create new products or services. The best way to do this is to quietly sit and observe how a typical day for our customers goes.

If you are interested, we are looking for 3 to 4 hours to sit with you and observe.  There will be little interaction except for occasional clarification question. Also, this is not a sales call!  This is strictly a customer research project. During our visit we will be taking copious notes, and would love to take some video (with your permission).

Why are Customer Safaris helpful?

Customer Safaris help Symantec better understand how people work, so we identify current pain points and find gaps in our products, and where we can make improvements. For you, it gives you the opportunity to help us get a holistic view of your work so we understand how best to develop solutions to make your work life easier and more productive.

When?

We are looking to schedule visits as soon as your schedule will allow.

If your are interested, please fill out this quick questionnaire. If you have questions, please either email me or reply to this post.

Thank you so much!
Elizabeth

I need a solution

i would like to see if anyone has successfully created a BPLIST Script that can show files backed up from the previous night.  Basically i am trying to view backups between 8pm and 8:10pm every night.  I can view the output using the following command:  bplist -B -C psaphanaecp01.loves.com -t 17 -s 04/29/2014 20:00:00 -e 04/29/2014 20:10:00 -l -R / ,  but i am unable to pass the date minus 1 day to the command through powershell.  If anyone has any advice i would be thankful.

Show detailed location of backup sets

$

Backup Exec 2012 shows no information about the location of a backup set other than "Disk" or "Tape" in Backup and Restore > Servers. This is extremely frustrating when I am trying to figure out if I have sufficient backup sets of a particular server or if a backup set can be safely deleted. I duplicate backup sets to to removable drives for offsite protection and it is very time consuming to tell if a server has a recent backup set offsite. When I go into a server and select Backup Sets, I need it to show the following information for each backup set:

Type of storage - Disk, Dedupe folder or Tape

Name of the disk storage volume/dedupe folder it is in.

The media label if it is on tape.
