I'm getting multiple 196 errors at 11:59:59 even though the Start Window is set for 5:30pm - 5:00am the following day.

We're using 7.6.0.4 Master, Media, and all clients. Last night, it was both VMs and a few physical Unix boxes. Schedules are Frequency Based.

I've read a few tech notes that stated this problem was resolved in previous versions. I'd appreciate a pointer to a solution.

Moving DLO backup files

I need a solution

We are planning our annual team meeting and will have 200+ sales reps there.  We are planning on bacing up their data with our DLO solution.  Rather than tunnelling all of this data over an expensive pipe back to our main office, is it possible to set up a local DLO server at the hotel, then transfer the backups to our main server later?

Thanks,

Netbackup client can't connect on backup interface

I need a solution

We have a Solaris NBU master, and Solaris and Linux clients, each of which have a NIC on the public network and a NIC on the  backup network,

The Solaris and linux clients are all configured with a bp.conf of:

SERVER = NBU master backup NIC

CLIENT = client backup NIC

and policy has been setup (one for each O/S) with the client using the backup NIC and Solaris clients work, but Linux does not as the host will not connect

If we change bp.conf to use public NIC for SERVER  and CLIENT  and change client in policy to use public NIC, then Linux will connect.

I have check all the obvious stuff between NBU master and Linux client:

  • Both hosts can ping each other on backup interface using hostname
  • Both hosts can telnet to each other on ports 1556 and 13782

Any ideas what else to check?

The NBU master is 7.5.0.6 on Solaris 10

The Solaris client is 7.5 on Solaris 10

The Linux client is 7.0.1 on Redhat 6.4

Moving Netbackup to a New Server

I need a solution

Hi All,

I'm looking at moving Netbackup (7.1.0.4) to a new server. Once this has stablized I will update to the latest version. From what I understand I need to copy the DR file to the new server and then after the import run a catalog restore. I assume that I have to take the latest INCR and FULL DR files for the import? I also want to change the name of the server. From what I was researching using this method it requires the same hostname. Are there any other options if I want to change the hostname?

Netbackup 7.5.0.4 Ports for Master Server Redhat Rhel5.2 to Client Server Windows 2008 R2 SP1

I need a solution

Hello,

I have installed the Client Installation Software on our Windows Server. I opened ports bi-directional PBX 1556 and VNETD 13724 on the Windows Firewall and those ports are open on the Master Server. I am still receiving Status 58 when running a Daily Differential for All Local Drives.

I read to perform the following test:

Create bpcd folder under C:\Programs\Vertias\Netbackup\logs on the client and on the Master run the following command: bptestbpcd -client <client-name> -verbose and Check output for errors as well as log file client's bpcd log file.

I do not see where I can run the bptestbpcd when I go to /usr/openv/netbackup/bin on the Master Server

Can someone guide me where to run this test on the Master Server? I have already created the bpcd folder on the Client Server.

*Note:

- Master and Media server are the same

- We are running Netbackup 7.5.0.4 on a Linux RedHat RHEL5.2 version

- Client is a Windows 2008 R2 SP1

Can clients installed with traditional kits be updated with kits from an appliance?

I need a solution

Hi forum,

Several questions around this...

1) If I have a backup client, and the NetBackup client software was installed using a traditional base version + patch, then can this client be patched/upgraded using a newer client kit from an appliance?  Or do I have to un-install the 'traditional client patch and base' and re-install using the kit from an appliance?

2) And the same question but the other way around... If I have a backup client, and the NetBackup client software was installed using a kit from an appliance, then can this client be patched/upgraded using a traditional patch kit?  Or do I have to un-install the 'appliance type kit' and re-install using a traditional base + patch kit?

3) If they cannot be mixed, then how does one determine whether a client was installed using an appliance kit vs. a traditional kit?

Thanks.

X64 Bit Snapshot error

I need a solution

Hello

I just got System Recovery 2013 R2 to Backup 60 computers (mostly Dell) I have been able to load the agend and Make a backup on 4 PC's but there are a couple that fail.

This one I am concerned with here is a Windows 7 Dell  64 bit tower with a raid 1 disk set with 2 partitions C:\ D:\. When I run the backup it runs all the way to the end .then gets an error ('Error E0BB00B5: Snapshot error Error)  Symsnap couldn't make a snapshot. Something to do with VSS. I found and tried a few technical procedures and forum entries. I tried. tried defragging both partitions and ran it a one time backup.  On partition D: it ran and finished fine. The C: partition still fails after defragging and installation updates. I also tried to run Vss procedured in one of the technical docs .

Technical document TECH125517 Has a procedure using endpoint protection.

Another has a CMD procedure to register a vss dll . But the 64 bit does not have that registry key in the specified  drivers folder. I can't seem to locate the document right now but it was for BESR

I ran BESR 8.5 and it ran without issues( all I had before upgrading) never tried to restore it , Not sure it would work. I still have some XP boxes I still use BESR on.

Last error I got was Snapshot error %1.
--Error EBAB03F1: Following Operating System error occurred while performing requested operation: 'OS error 2147754994.'

This was when trying to just backup C: Partition.

Thanks for the Help

renaming Quantum OST storage server name

I need a solution

Hi!

We have a Quantum DXI6702 OST Storage server.

The storage server name, as per documentation, is made by the hostname and the IP used to connect to it, in my case:

QTM6702-VI-570-AIR_172.24.62.21

We need to use a new 10gbs interface configured on this appliance, have we to rename the existing storage server with this command:

nbemmcmd -renamehost -machinename QTM6702-VI-570-AIR_172.24.62.21 -machinetype ndmp -newmachinename QTM6702-VI-570-AIR_223.13.13.247

?

or have we to create a new storage server with new disk pool?

is there someone who has Quantum OST experience?

Thank you in advance

Simone

Just added a Media Server. Should the Master server be listed on Media Servers Tab under Host Properties?

I just added a Media server to a Master server that didn't previously use a dedicated Media server.  I noticed that under Host Properties > Servers > Media Servers tab, the Master server is listed in addition to the Media server I just added.  Is this the proper way to configure it (best practice?), or can I remove the Master server from the Media Servers tab?  Or would it not hurt to just leave the Master server listed there?

Backups not crossing mount point

I need a solution

I have four file servers in a single policy with the bulk of their data sitting on mount points. I have the Cross Mount Points checked off (always have), but we just found out through a restore attempt that the backups have not been traversing the mount point since August. I have created a new test policy and reran the backup on just one of the four servers with the same results. Any thoughts?

Hello Everyone,

Here is our scenario,

Week B ==> Mon,Tues,Wed, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Last Sunday of the Month: - Monthly Backup of either week A or B.

We wish to setup Daily backup and assign each slot a Day.  E.g Mon=Slot 1, Tues, Slot 2.  After which it will need to make the backup each day but on the next following week, it will need to change to Week B.

We wish also that on every last Sunday either being on Week A or B, it makes up a full weekly backup.

Finally the last sunday of each month the montly backup.  depending which will be in the library.

Can anyone guide us or is there any other better way of doing Daily, Weekly and Monthly but keeping in mind we need a minimum of 2 set of tapes.

Thanks

Solution for Weekly Rotation of Backup Drives

I need a solution

I'm trying to figure out the best solution for managing my company's external hard drives which are acting as backups that we take home weekly. Here's how we'd like it go:

1. I have two external drives, D Drive and G Drive

2. Week 1, bring in G Drive and connect to server, take D Drive home

3. Scheduled Full Backup runs on Saturday morning

4. Week 2, swap out D Drive and G Drive, take G Drive home

What we currently do is use Storage Pools. I have a storage pool with both G and D drives in it. I set them up as a job to run right after our regular weekly Full backup as a duplicate. Its data retention is 4 weeks. I've also changed the BE settings to "Allow BE to delete all expired backup sets." This way, if one of our external drives gets too big, we won't miss a backup because the space was too small, or if we happen to miss a week to swap them, we'll still have a backup taken. Is this an efficient solution?

One issue I'm curious about is the warning that the external drive is removed. Since we're rotating these drives every week, we need to remove them often. I'm used to the "offline" error messages you get when you remove a drive, but someone else isn't. How do I get rid of them?

We also have two more drives that we'd like to take backups every 6 months. One problem that I foresee in this is setting up a reminder for us to remember to bring the backup drives from home. Does BE have reminders for a soon-approaching job? What are some efficient strategies for doing a biannual backup?

Distinct options to Backup MySQL with Netbackup 7.x

 I studied distinct options we have for MySQL backup with Netbackup. We do not have any direct Netbackup agent for MySQL, BUT MySQL backup integration with Netbackup achievable via 2 different options.

            Options 1:   Using MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB)

            Options 2:   Zmanda Recovery Manager

Options 1:

MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) is now integrated feature of MySQL Enterprise Edition (also downloadable separately), this method do backup and restore of MySQL databases using the Oracle SBT API.  The Symantec NetBackup for Oracle agent implements the Oracle SBT API.  However, Symantec NetBackup was not part of the development or subsequent testing of this method to backup and restore MySQL. MEB reportedly works well but, at this time, Symantec does not provide formal support and cannot comment on its appropriateness for any give business solution.

Notes:  Backup & restore command syntax has to be initiated from Client Side. Managing backup & restore from server side not possible

Pre-requisites:

  1. Netbackup Master License
  2. MySQL Enterprise Edition
  3. NetBackup for Oracle Agent license (server based)

Option 2:

MySQL Agent for NetBackup from Zmanda is deeply integrated and certified with NetBackup 7.x using the XBSA API. The agent supports backup of MySQL versions 4.1 and 5.x. Both MySQL Community and Enterprise Editions are supported.

Also, Zmanda is a member of the Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP) and will engage Symantec to resolve mutual issues.

In fact, Symantec NetBackup now enables live backup of MySQL, using two solutions provided by Zmanda:

Zmanda MySQL Agent for NetBackup

Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) for MySQL, with NetBackup Option

Note: MySQL backups and schedules are managed via the NetBackup GUI.

Supported OS for MySQL Servers: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.x and 6.x, CentOS 5.x and 6.x, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10.x and 11.x

Pre-requisites:

  1. Netbackup Master License
  2. MySQL Enterprise Edition
  3. NetBackup Standard or Enterprise Client 7.x for Linux. Perl.
  4. ZMR for MySQL (server based)

** NetBackup Application & Database Pack is not required.

Main steps to perform the install mode and configuration for SQL Backup:

  1. Before we begin with the procedures, we verify the compatibility of Software Database with the version of NetBackup. Follow the link: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH126904
  2. Add the license for SQL Agent;
  3. In SQL Host, install the Client Netbackup;
  4. Configure the ODBC;
  5. Configure Netbackup account so it can access the database.
    • Setting the sysadmin permission in SQL following groups:
      • NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
      • BUILTIN\ADMINISTRATOR
      • BUILTIN\USERS
    • Define a security type Database: Simple, Full, Bulk Logged
    • Set the account of Netbackup (Windows logon) to access the database data.
  6. The NetBackup uses the services: NetBackup Client and NetBackup Legacy Network Service to access SQL Server. Therefore, make sure that they are running;
  7. In SQL Server, open SQL Client (as administrator). Enter the information:
    • Host SQL Server;
    • Instance;
    • Login account Netbackup;
    • Login Password Netbackup;
  8. The credential information in Netbackup SQL is saved in the path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\NETBACKUP\NETBACKUP FOR MICROSOFT SQL. The level of client credentials to get in the way: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\NETBACKUP\NETBACKUP CLIENT;
  9. Create scripts (.bch) for execution of database backups. So, follow the steps below:
    • Open Netbackup MS SQL Client (SQL Server) as administrator;
    • Click in File > Backup SQL Server objects;
    • In Expand database, search database correct;
    • In Select database(s), choosedatabase. For set database, press CTRL + database correct;
    • In Type of Backup, choice the Backup type;
    • In Backup script, click in Save;
    • In Backu up, choose option Selected;
    • In Stripes, choose number of Backup sumultaneous;
    • In Netbackup policy, insert name policy created in Netbackup Console;
    • Click in Backup;
    • Save in: C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\DbExt\MsSql
  10. Create backup policy, in Netbackup Console. The name must be identical to the policy created in the SQL Client Console;
    • In policy type, choose MS-SQL-Server;
    • In Clients, insert the SQL Host;
    • Backup Selections, add the script created by the SQL Client Netbackup console;
  11. Set the Maximum jobs per client option. It will define the maximum number of simultaneous jobs per client. Choose a number, noting the amount of policies and servers. Symantec recommends setting it to 99;

  12. Run the Backup policy and and track your finish;

  13. For restore de datases:

    • Open Netbackup MS SQL Client (SQL Server) as administrator;

    • Click in File > Restore SQL Server objects;

I need a solution

Hi community!  I have Backup Exec 2012 v 14 running on a Windows Server 2003 R2 server.  I want to upgrade the server to 2012.  I'll have to perform a clean install of Server 2012 since there isn't an upgrade path from 2003 r2 to 2012.  My question is: can I install Backup Exec 2012 v14 on a Windows Server 2012 server?  Another question: can backup exec 2012 backup Windows Server 2012 servers? And yet another question: can I reinstall Backup Exec 2012 onto a new server using the license I have?

Thanks!

Details on how VM backups work

I need a solution

I've been looking through technical document for a couple days and I'm either not seeing or not understanding some technical details concerning VMWare backups.  Sme of the document are long winded and not particularly direct in some details, so it's certainly possible I read it and missed it.

First my setup...

  • Backup Exec 2014
  • Windows 2008 R2
  • ESX 5.5
  • EMC SAN stores the VMs
  • About 10 VMs are being backed up, the largest of which is 1.5TB.
  • I backup through the vCenter server.
  • I am NOT using GRT on any of them as I do not have the disk space for staging.
  • I backup directly to LTO tape (see previous bullet re: disk space).

What I'd like to know is the following...

  1. How are VMs backed up exactly?  Snapshots?  Or direct block reads?
  2. Same question as #1, full vs. incremental?

I'm concerned because the SAN is nearly full.  There's some wiggle room, but nowhere near enough to create a snapshot of several of the larger VMs.  A full snapshot of a 1.5TB VM would fail.  I have maybe 300GB of empty space on a 4TB SAN.

I do have a basic understanding of how VMWare snapshots work, but certainly I'm not all-knowing.  I could certainly be missing on the front.

Any knowledge on these topic where backups is concerned is appreciated.
