Symantec Backup Exec 2014 Blueprints - Small Environments

$

0

The Technical Services team for Backup and Recovery have produced a number of documents we call "Blueprints".

These Blueprints are designed to show backup and recovery challenges around specific technologies or functions and how Backup Exec solves these challenges.

Each Blueprint consists of:

  • Pain Points: What challenges customers face
  • Whiteboard: Shows how Backup Exec solves the customer challenges
  • Recommended Configuration: Shows recommended installation
  • Do’s: Gives detailed configurations suggested by Symantec
  • Don'ts: What configurations & pitfalls customers should avoid
  • Advantages: Summarizes the Backup Exec advantages

Small businesses are generally comprised of three servers or less, they are predominantly Windows or Windows SBS, but still have the presence of Critical Applications, such as Exchange and SQL. Quite surprisingly there is usually a high adoption rate of virtualization, sometimes these environments are entirely virtualized, but with a comparatively basic topology and infrastructure. Smaller infrastructures need simplicity. It’s not core to the business so need a comparatively simple backup and recovery processes but something that can deal with backup policies that include local and offsite protection.

Backup Exec Small Business Edition: Simplified By Design

  • Does not include deduplication
  • Does not include support for direct-to-tape backup
  • Does not include VMware VADP support
  • SBE can be installed on any Windows server that is supported by Backup Exec
  • Limited to protecting five servers or less in a given environment

Looking for Advanced Features? Try Backup Exec “Standard”

  • Larger environments (beyond 3 servers) should consider Backup Exec
  • Includes advanced functionality and scalability components
  • VMware VADP integration, data deduplication are prime examples
  • Multiple licensing choices including V-Ray Edition, Capacity Licensing, BE 3600 Appliance, and others

Remote Office Protection

Market changes in recent years have made cloud-based backup and recovery technologies attractive to both small businesses and Managed Service Providers who are looking for better solutions to the problem of storing backup data at offsite locations for disaster recovery. There are also many instances that need the ability to backup remote offices or sites.

For years, removable media solutions, such as tape, have been used to solve this problem. Now both businesses with remote offices as well as Managed Service Providers are looking for automated, less complex solutions.

Managed Service Providers also commonly leverage Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) tools, to help with the command and control problem of offering services to a large number of individual small businesses.

Successful and automated backup and recovery operations at remote sites can be a difficult goal for administrators to achieve. Administrators need the ability to protect critical IT resources at remote office locations and store copies of backup data offsite, but often lack sufficient manpower at remote offices to handle the management of removable media storage devices commonly used for backup, such as tape.

Managing smaller environments can be as challenging as a result of the natural growth process companies experience over time, IT environments may experience changes that can increase the difficulty of achieving a successful data protection strategy. Some of these changes may include the following:

  • Increase in the number of critical data and application servers that need to be protected
  • Increase in the amount of data in the environment
  • Increase in the number and complexity of backup servers and associated storage devices
  • Additional company sites or locations

The Backup Exec™ 2014 Enterprise Server Option is designed to help IT administrators and Managed Service Providers meet the backup protection needs of growing companies. The Enterprise Server Option includes tools to scale a backup infrastructure and associated management capabilities to meet the needs of a growing environment. The Enterprise Server Option includes two components, which are as follows:

  1. Central Admin Server Option (CASO)
  2. Advanced Disk-based Backup Option (ADBO)

CASO and ADBO are optional components that can be leveraged to expand and scale the capabilities of a Backup Exec™ 2014 environment.

Central Administration Server Option

The first component of the Backup Exec™ 2014 Enterprise Server Option is the Central Admin Server Option (CASO). CASO can help address a number of key problems associated with large or growing environments, including centralized management and monitoring of backup servers, load balancing of backup operations, centralization of backup data, and offsite disaster recovery.

Centralized Management and Monitoring

One of the most important capabilities that CASO enables for administrators is the ability to centrally manage and monitor backup and recovery operations across multiple Backup Exec servers in an environment. This includes protection policy configuration and deployment, backup server management, storage device management, reporting, as well as the ability to monitor the status of protected servers and associated active alerts.

Netbackup 7.6.0.3 (Master, media and client)

OS:Linux (Master, media and client)

I have enabled resilient network on one of clients and its creating unified "nbrntd" logs, I can disable it by set logging to zero on media and master server, but how to do it on client?

also

On client I see few unified logs getting created, starting with 51216-112, I checked in nblog.conf, I didnt find any name associated with ID 112. will by default any unified logs get created on clients?

I need to know how to manage unified logging on clients.

I need a solution

Hi All,

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77448

1..Can i use 'Recovery without Import " option for catalog recovery on a new master server?

i have ran a full catalog backup on old master server A.

Now i have read that in 'Recovery without Import" option ,we copy the /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/client name folder and scp it to the new master server B on the same location.

But if its a catalog backup, then what directories i have to copy from A to B in order for 'Recovery without Import " to work? i know my catalog tapes id for master server A.

I have shipped the tapes to the master server B and inserted in the library with new barcode rules and mew volume pool.

2...Is 'Recovery without Import " only used when we are restoring  backup client data from A to B not for Catalog migration from A to B. ??

Hello,

i am trying to authoritative restore AD on a remote windows 2008 R2 server. If the server, to be restored, is started normally, backup exec could logon with the domain admin credentials. But in this case AD could not be restored. DSRM must be used.

But if the windows 2008 R2 is started in dsrm mode and i try to change the logon account in backup exec to the dsrm administrator account i get an error that the used account is not valid. What is going wrong here?

Running Netbackup Appliances on 2.6.0.3.

Having an issue where a couple of our backup clients, configured with policies that specify the ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES directive, but Exclude lists that list C:\ and S:\.  The only affected clients are configured as FT clients.  When the backups run, child jobs are created for all drives, including the c:\ and s:\ drives.  These jobs eventually fail with "(90) media manager received no data for backup image".

Has anyone come across this before or have any suggestions?

BackupExec 2012 v. 14 - Jobs get placed on hold

I need a solution

A few weeks ago over a weekend none of my jobs ran.  And when I opened the console they showed to have been placed on HOLD.  I didn't think anything about it, just turn off HOLD and things were fine.  Then a week goes by and it happens again.  First thing I did was to reinstall BackupExec.  That actually resolved it up until today.  I came in this morning and they missed backups since Thursday.  (I was off Friday so I didn't check it)  If you're thinking it's just my weekend jobs, that's not it.  The 2nd time it happened was on a Tuesday night.

The difference now is that I turn them off HOLD and they go through the cycle of starting up and immediately go back to HOLD.  It's not ALL my jobs though.  And there's no pattern either, like sometimes it will be my FULL backups and other times my INCREMENTAL.   I have 3 servers and sometimes it happens on 2 of my server jobs and other times just 1server's jobs.

I've got plenty of storage space, no errors there.  No other errors either.

I'm running it on a Windows 2003 Server (R1).  Before you trip out on me I'm slated to install a brand new 2012 Server in February so I'll be ready when Microsoft drops 2003.   Anyway, I'm at my wit's end.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

A drive is in SCAN-TLD mode/control. The drive seems underutilised as it has low mounts.

There is another drive in TLD with low mounts as well.

The two drives were down and I up the drives and found that one is in SCAN_TLD. Some Backup fails with error code 196

How can this issue be resolved.

Any ideas?

Scan shows all the drives
