Synthetic backup after a Cumulative incremental backup?

I need a solution

Hello,

I am using BackupExec 2014 running on a windows 2012 server. I want to create a synthetic backup after a full backup and a culmulative incremental backup.  (Full Backup-> Cumulative Incremental Backup -> Synthetic Backup) But I am unable to do so. The only way I seem to be able to do a synthetic backup is after one full backup and one differential incremental backup (Full Backup ->Differential Incremental Backup ->Synthetic Backup). Is this the only way to go about doing it?  The option seems to be very rigid. 

What if I want to do a full backup and 2 differential incremental backups before I do a synthetic backup? I cannot seem to customize the process to my needs. 

Please let me know. I am a new user and am unable to find a solution to this problem anywhere online.

I need a solution

Hi. This is my first time posting in this forum. I have recently encountered afew adwares on my office and personal pc. I have done many things and i ended up with my pc being faster again but with an server execution error. Whenever i startup my computer, installservices64 would give me server execution error. Another thing is that when i right click and choose Personalize or Screen resolution, the server execution error would show up again. Lastly, when i press the start button and go to PC settings, it would hang and crash eventually. I am guessing there is a missing registry or some settings behind deleted by the virus. PLEASE HELP!

Veritas has been busy this March with the announcement of the NetBackup vSphere 6 same day support, support for Google Cloud Storage Nearline, and even hosting the first ever NetBackup Reddit Ask-Me-Anything (AMA).  We here at Veritas are excited about the advancements taking place both within Veritas and within the marketplace.

During our AMA we answered your questions as accurately and quickly as possible, but we were cut short due to a technical issues with the site.  Don't worry thought, we will have a follow up AMA early summer.

  1. What -can- you tell us about general plans/directions? What kinds of good stuff is going on in the world of Netbackup?

  3. Elephant in the room is Veeam. What do you offer in direct competition with Veeam and why do you think your product is better?
  4. Last I checked, the licensing and add-ons and options still seemed to be a mess. In my opinion... the marketing info rarely makes clear that certain options are extra $$$. Are you planning on making it clearer which add-ons and options are extra cost?

  • We purchased a Netbackup appliance for a testbed in one of our outer offices and found it to be a very simple solution. The ease of setup allowed us to basically drop it in and start backup for or environment in less than one hour. Also the ability to replicate images using acceleration (AIR) between the outer office to the larger backup environment was a pleasant surprise.

When I run the install program on this server and try to choose the option to make it a "managed media server", the option is greyed out.   I didn't have this problem on several other standalone servers that were migrated to managed media servers.

I need a solution

Hi,

Im getting error on my replication job with status 84. Is it because the replicating server nbu6 encountered a disk failed on its EVA storage? Although it was replaced already and status now is still levelling. Maybe from the source media server - nbu4, when trying to replicate to other site nbu6 it cannot fully complete cause of the replaced disk currently levelling?

Novell OES Restore single files

Hello everyone,

I've got a VMware Backup of SUSE Linux 10 SP 4 with Novell OES 2 SP 3.

The Backup includes a NSS Volume - it runs successfully.

When I try to restore I can browse through the folders but no files are shown.

The size of the backup looks good, so my question is whether this is a normal behavior that I cannot restore a single file?

LTO3 to LTO5 (and another one)

I need a solution

We are getting ready to upgrade our backup heads to accept LTO5 (from LTO3). Is there anything we need to do to prepare for this or will NBU just "see" it.. I'm running this on Windows server 2k8 R2 and NBU version 7.5.0.6...

Another little question is the previous owner had email notifications come to him for cleaning (I'm a new employee).. I've looked at Host Properties-->Global Attributes, and see the email address but is that for cleaning reminders too???


Snapshot error encountered(156)

I need a solution

Client fialing is a windows 2008 , keeps failing with status 156 . It is a Virtual VMWare Machine , we have this client in a Folder and that folder gets backed up along with other clients in it , all other clients are working OK in that folder except for this one

Client Server was rebooted couple of times, no go, i've ran vssadmin list witers and i see no errors , when I run vssadmin list providers , i see

Reparing SSR 2013 R2

Hello,

Recently I found a reparing process in SSR, which is not proposed in the users'book ! Last two years, with Windows 8.1, I was suffering many troubles with the SSR Agent (if the computer remains unused during two weeks or if you change a hard disk which arrives out of order). SSR says something like: "Connexion failed ..."; "Can't spread out the agent ..."; "Incorrect user's name or user's password". Recently I am on the point to throw SSR to the garbage can, but as an ultimate effort I decide to reinstall the same SSR version on the preceeding (without deleting the existing version). Of course a comment arrives: "You can't install two exemplaries of SSR ...". OK; The interesting fact arrives after a while: a window with two items; -1- repair SSR - Menu2- reinstall SSR. I select "Repair ..." .The repairing process takes place with the usual two progression bars and SSR is launched successfully with my personnal configuration ! Conclusion: 1- very likely in some cases the SSR agent is desactivated. Unfortunately SSR don't give any valid way to reactivate it. You have to consult the user's notice to find how to reactivate it in the Windows Services Menu. 2- I was not aware of the existence of any repairing process in SSR !

How to find the Windows Service Menu with Windows 8.1: under MUI type anywhere "Services" and click on Services. On the list which arrives select, near the bottom "Symantec System Recovery". At the upper left corner it appears a SSR service description, and two items: Activate, Desactivate. Good luck ! MR:-)

BE2014SP2 Small Business Edition Agent License Problem

We've installed a Small Business Server 2011 in a virtual Machine (Microsoft Hyper-V engine running with Windows Server 2012 R2). Physical Machine with an installed Backup Exec 2014 SP2 refuses to recognize the Small Business Server. Therefore the license for the Small Business Edition Agent expires after 60 days.

BE License file is recognized as Small Business Edition 2014.

Is there a applicable Solution? The installation of the Backup Exec program on the Hyper-V server is necessary, because of the LTO4 tape drive (SAS).

NetBackup and 3Par VSS

I need a solution

A couple of months ago I posted about backups not crossing mount points to get data and now I can shed a bit more information on the troubleshooting but I am still a bit stumped and would appreciate your advice.

We are migrating a bunch of our VM's over to a 3PAR 7400 which also includes VM's that have RDM's attached. Since the migration, what we have noticed is that the data inside the RDM does not get backed up by Netbackup when using Snapshots. The backup completes with a 0, so I always assume the data is sitting in my tapes or Datadomains...until I try to restore. As soon as I turn Snapshot off, and use Cross Mount Points, the data gets backed up with a problem, however it seems to run 2-3 times slower than a snapshot backup. SInce we are talking 10-15 Tb of data, I need a quicker solution.

I have talked with Symantec about this and they suggested just turning off the Snapshot, however my backups for 7 servers takes approximately 6 days to complete when I do that.  Symantec's other suggestion is the 3PAR VSS writer, however that requires a license we don't have on the 3PAR.

I'm open to any suggestions as the one's i've received from my VAR when we set this up 3 years ago, appear to not be the greatest set of best practices.

Hello,

I have a configuration question and wanted to get the groups input on this.

We use NetBackup (7.6) to backup data from NetApp filers  and I am trying to configure NetBackup in such way that it could backup data from a netapp snapshot while exact snapshot name is not known beforehand.

I think this essentially boils down to ability to dynamically adjust policy’s “Backup Selection List” just before backup starts.

One possible solution seems to be running bpplinclude utility and modify the list from within bpstart_notify script of the policy which “Backup Selection List” needs to be modified.

A concern I have is that it may not be possible and/or supported to use bpplinclude to modify “Backup Selection List” of a policy from within its own bpstart_notify script and for the change to take effect during the same policy run.

How to restore files with specific extension using NetBackup commandline tools.

Often customer does face the situation where Backup Operator does need to restore specific set of files and B&R GUI is not a sollution.

Nowadays such situations does increase in volume due to possible Virus outbrakes. At this very moment the biggest issues infected system does face are viruses alike cryptoplocker which use asymetric encryption to cypher files or viruses which are simply corrupting such files.

NOTE: Please remember that OS protection software like Symantec Endpoint Protection should be always installed on servers and Enabled, do not try install only Anti Virus module. You will be only protected if all modules will be up and running).

The best option after cleaning infected machines from viruses is to restore corrupted files. NetBackup does have B&R GUI which allows to perform restore very easly. The problem rises if You do need to restore back +1000 of files from different directories, GUI than is not the best option.

Thankfully NetBackup does allow to use commandline tools like bpfis and bpbkar to facilitate such processes. Please remember that apropiate knowleadge of those tools can easen daily job for every Administrator.

How to approach to restore:

First it is always worth to check if specific server machine was properly backed up. To do that You can usae bpcoverage tool.

In bellow output we can see that netbackup7604 host is secured with 2 policies, Master_Server and MSDP_Backup but only C:\ Volume is secured fully. E:\  Volume is used for MSDP which is a reason why there is no protection enabled for this volume. 

IMPORTANT: Please remember that the best protection for images located on MSDP is to duplicate them to other Media, Storage Server MSDP Pool(Optimize Duplication) or Disaster Recovery domain(AIR technology).

In this specific situation all pdf files were corrupted by virus and there is a need to recover them to original places.

Knowing which policy was used and what Volumes were protected we can easly start to prepare file list with the files we do want to restore (all pdf files). In this example we do not need to place policy name. In case Server is protected by multiple policies you can use "-k" switch to specify specific policy. If "-k" switch will not be used all policies will be taken in the consideration.

Open CommandLine and go to C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin.

Run command:  bplist -C netbackup_client_name -t 13 -T -s 02/10/2015 -I -PI "*.pdf"> C:\pdf_files_to_restore.txt

If TIR backups are not used : bplist -C netbackup_client_name -t 13 -s 02/10/2015 -I -PI "*.pdf"> C:\pdf_files_to_restore.txt

Example: bplist -C netbackup7604 -t 13 -T -s 02/10/2015 -PI "*.pdf"> C:\pdf_files_to_restore.txt

IMPORTANT: bplist might exit with various statuses which might be misleading. Bellow You can find the most frequent.

- EXIT STATUS 227: no entity was found -- command is good but there is nothing to present

- EXIT STATUS 144: invalid command usage -- self explanatory

After creating list of files to restore, next step is to run bprestore with a file list to recover.

bprestore -C netbackup7604 -f C:\pdf_files_to_restore.txt -s 2/9/2015

If Job was sucesfull all files are restored in its original place and Server is in pre-indection state.

Remove backup jobs and all associated data

Hi dear BE forum,

I have some old backups jobs that were running on a specific device. I'd like to get rid of everything regarding the jobs: BE data, actual B2D files, the BE device...

I am not sure on how to do this properly, coul you guide me ?

My understanding is the following:

-remove the jobs

-in the device list move to the unused device, select all Media in it and move to 'Retired Media' set

-Still in the Device view, select all Media in the old device and delete

-right click on the Device and delete

NDMP Backup failing

Hi

I have an issue with NDMP backups failing which I'm hoping to find a solution for. I have configured a new appliance running 7.6.0.3 and added it into an existing master media config. Master is windows running 7.6.0.2 and the other media is RHEL running 7.6.0.2. The ndmp host is a netapp already configured and I can successfully write ndmp backups from it to disk storage unit on the master/media which is a Quantum DXI disk pool. The new appliance has an MSDP pool, configured as a disk storage unit and I am trying to write ndmp backups to it. I have added a host file entry on the appliance to it is using the correct Netapp interface. I can telnet to the Netapp on that interface from the appliance on 10000 and tpautoconf -verify also works from the appliance. When I start a backup, I can see a new connection on the netapp by running ndmpd status so I know its making a connection. However, that backup fails with error 99. SreEula.exe - System Error when booting 2013 R2 SRD

I need a solution

Hi all.

I have had a support ticket open on this now for almost two weeks, with no luck.

I have 2 issues.

Dell Poweredge T420.  Intel Xeon E5-2450 2.1.  16GB RAM.    Windows Server 2012 R2 Std.   System Recover 2013 R2 w/ current MS ADK installed.  

All Windows updates installed, and Live update ran.

1.  When trying to create a "Typical" SRD, I am only offered "German" as a language selection. 

2.  More imporant issue:    I cannot boot the Advanced 64-bit SRD after seemingly successfully creating it in English.   Booting starts out fine.  Blue Windows logo...white spinning in process icon.  I get the symantec boxes for loading drivers, checking system requirements, network confguration, but then I get an error box titled:  "SreEula.exe - System Error" .  The message is: "The program can't start because oledlg.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem".  I have tried repairing, uninstallling and re-installing the software multiple times, but always get the same error. 

I haven't gotten anywhere with tech support.

Anyone with any ideas??

Can´t backup off line databases

HI all.

I have a BE2014 SP2 installed on Windows 2012 R2 Standart and set backup job to my dabases on SQL Server 2012. However, I can´t backup some databases and the job log is this

This databases are our DRP site, and it´s necessary set standby state. Have any ideas, folks?
