behavior of duplication when there is a problem with media header

I need a solution

Hi,

I have data backed up to VTL which then get duplicated to physical tapes via SLP. One of the virtual tapes in VTL has problem with header corruption. This tape happens to be one of the tapes used for a backup set of 3TB data. the data seem to back up to virtual tapes ok but have trouble with duplication. Every time NetBackup tries to duplicate to physical tapes, it says something like:

10/13/2014 13:05:48 - Error bptm (pid=28465) cannot read backup header on V01965, tape may be bad

10/13/2014 13:05:48 - Info bptm (pid=28465) EXITING with status 173 <----------

The image on VTL expires in 60 days. So I am wondering:

1. After the image expires, will the duplication job still run? Or the image will remain valid until the duplication is successful?

2. Does it mean every time it duplicates, it has wasted physical tapes for writing data until it encouters the header error on this virtual tape? That is, what happens if NetBackup writes 2.5TB data to physical tapes and then encounters a fatal error? Are 2.5TB worth of physical tapes wasted?

Thank you!
