I need a solution

Hi,

I have been managing our BE 2010 servers for quite some time but this would be my first attempt at migrating. Apologies in advance for the dumb questions. We will be migrating our current BE 2010R3 to BE 2014. I would just like to know if there are existing articles about best practices on how to do this. So far I have found this link but it seems to apply only to BE 2010 to BE 2010 migrations. Thanks in advance.

Current Environment:

BE 2010R3 running on Windows Server 2003 R2

DB is running on SQL Server 2005

New Environment:

BE 2014 running on Windows Server 2012 Standard

DB - not decided yet

In terms of what to migrate, I was told it will be up to me to decided should I want to migrate the DB and Catalog or just start from scratch. Questions about these:

1) If I decide not to migrate anything, will it be impossible to restore any backup that was created prior to the migration? Our current problem stems from the fact that the Catalog files have consumed the entire HD and that there is just no more space. What are the advantages and disadvantages of not migrating the DB and Catalog files?

2) If I decide to migrate the Backup Jobs, Backup Selection Lists, Backup Job Setup, and Policies only, where do I find these files? I am assuming from the DB, but again, just wanted to be sure.

3) How do I preserve the current listing in Media Sets? Would want to migrate those too if possible.
