Replicated Servers from Offsite Media Servers added to Vault

I need a solution

Hello all,

We run a monthly back up to tape from our Master Server using Vault Management. We also have a handful of offsite media servers with no tape robots that simply go to disk. I have setup replication from these media servers to our main Master server with our robot. My question is how do I get these replicated images cut to tape using Vault with our monthly process? Is it possible? It seems Vault is policy based and since these are replicated images from their Media Servers and not pulled in through a specific policy from the Master server I am unsure if this is possible.

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Environment:

Netbackup 7.5.0.6 Master/Media Servers on Linux RHEL6 and a mix of Windows (2003/2008) and Linux machines.

Connectivity Issues in BE2010

I need a solution

I am having some trouble with BackupExec 2010. The media server is v.13.0 Rev. 2896 (64-bit).

We have 8 servers we back up- one is a SQL server, one is a Hyper-V server, one is an Exchange server, then there are a few file servers and a couple of VM's.

Everything is updated to the latest (As of 7/6) according to LiveUpdate.

The problems seem to stem from connectivity. The admin console will randomly drop the connection ot he BE database- Sometimes once in 2 hours, sometimes several times in a minute. Then I have to click the OK button and put in the password to reconnect. I have one job in particular that runs daily on the non-database information on our SQL server- sometimes it runs, and sometimes it will back up a few GB then throw an error E000846B which is a generic "lost connectivity" error. It succeeds about 2-3 out of six times a week. The backup target is a disk local to the media server, which is on a separate drive-based array from anything else (Except other backup jobs). I have since tried adding a separate network dedicated to the backups- Each server being backed up has a hardware port assigned to this backup network, which has no route to the Internet- Basically a simple LAN on a dedicated switch in which all members have static IP's and can ping each other.

In BE I have the job set to use the network connection for the backup network, and the SQL server has the remote agent set only to publish to the backup network IP address of the media server.

I have a second job that runs on this server as well- it is dedicated to backing up the MSSQL databases on the server. When I run it, it runs for less than a second and fails with an error E0000F02. The only way to get it to run is to allow it to use any network adapter it wants, which will push unwanted traffic over the production network, but does allow it to success most of the times it runs.

We never run more than two backup jobs at the same time as a tape backup, and one of those must be a local backup- This is for the sake of network communications and reducing unexpected errors. We run a B2D2T scenario, where the tape backup runs starting at 3am each day, database backups run at 12am and hyperV/fileserver backups start at 6PM.

I think the common theme here is a network connectivity issue- Our production network uses Cisco Catalyst 2960's @ 100MBPS, and the backup network uses a Netgear GS724T-300 (Chosen for solid history in data streaming applications, such as ghosting.... Any ideas why we are having these issues?

Thanks!

Hi all,

In my environment, we have a Offhost Backup running, due to a failure we encountered last week, we came to know that particular Backup was not a Offline but an Offhost Backup.

Can anybody pls brief me on Offhost Backup.

I have a rough idea..but the concept is not clear.

Supported langauges from the /usr/openv/msg/ .conf the entry for en_ZA is not available.

Currently NetBackup only supports the ISO 8895-1 standard for en_US language. You can find the further information regarding the listed language support for Java here > http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH154528.

This causes Problem on Java Gui restores- not displaying the restore list, the Gui hangs up.

Looking for in-depth information on Agent for VMware

I need a solution

So for planning out my environment, I need to understand more in depth what is going on "under the hood" with the Backup Exec Agent for VMware but I am having trouble locating the information I need.

Specificially, I need to understand the information flows - what data stream goes where during a backup operation.

For simplicity of discussion's sake, let's say I have the following minimal HA cluster configuration:

  • Two hosts, ESXi1 and ESXi2.
  • On those hosts, only a single virtual server is found. VM1 and VM2 (each on thier respective hosts)
  • A single vCenter server appliance is running on ESXi1
  • The media server is a physical machine. The vCenter server is configured in BE, and all jobs are configured as jobs underneath the vCenter server.
  • The storage back-end used by ESXi is a SAN consisting of two storage controllers. Each host connects with and communicates with all SANs. The protocol used by the ESXi hosts to communicate with the SAN is NFS.
  • The backup destination is an iSCSI SAN not attached or related to the SAN used by the ESXi hosts. I don't think they're germane to the discussion, but I'm listing them for the sake of completeness.

The first question I'm trying to answer is, "When backing up a Virtual Machine via a vCenter server, what is/are the data path(s)?"

So say I tell BE to back up VM2. VM2 is on a different host than the vCenter server, so which of the following is the true picture of how is BE getting it's data stream?

  1. Is BE pulling its data through the vCenter server, and vCenter in turn pulling from ESXi2 via ESXi1, which in turn pulls data from the SAN(s)? Path: BE <- ESXi1 <- vCenter (on ESXi1) <-> ESXi2 <- SAN
  2. Is BE using the vCenter server simply as an window into the vSphere world, but is actually cutting out one of the middle men and using VAAI to pull data from ESXi2 directly? Path: BE <- ESXi2 <- SAN
  3. Is BE using the Remote Agent for Windows and pulling data directly from the virtual the same as it would from a physical? Path: BE <- ESXi2 <- VM2

I suspect it's #2, but I can't find much in the way of documentation to piece together a definitive answer.

The second question, which is even deeper, and a follow up to #1, is which vmKernel port types are being used? For instance:

  1. If the answer is #1 above, is the vCenter to ESXi2 communication using the VM network ports, or the management vmKernel port?
  2. If the answer is #2 above, is the BE <-> ESXi2 commuication using the VM network ports, the management vmKernel port, or the vmKernel port used for NFS traffic?
  3. More questions based on what's moving where over what links.

There is a dearth of information about BE 2012 beyond the surface level. Hopefully someone out there can shed some light...

Printable list of servers in Backup Exec 2012

My supervisor asked me to provide him with what I thought would be a simple report: "What servers are being backed up?" After poking around in Backup Exec without any success, I put in a call to Symantec for assistance. I told the technician that I wanted a simple report similar to what is shown in the "Servers" view of the Backup and Restore tab. The technician informed me that this was not possible in the version of Backup Exec but if I posted a suggestion for future enhancement of the product, it might be included in the next service pack - and so here I am, suggesting such a feature. I would be nice if there was some sort of control over what columns from that view are included in the report but even if it was just the names of the servers this would be an improvement.

Issue doing a restore to a Volume on a NetApp FAS 3230

I need a solution

Good Friday all. I'm having an issue doing a restore to a Volune on a NetApp  FAS 3230 Filer running Ontap 7. I'm uising Netbackup 7.5.04 running on a master server running SUSE Linux:

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64)
VERSION = 11
PATCHLEVEL = 1

I'm restoring a 1.6 TB smvi snapshot to a destination Volume on one of our FAS 3230 Filers. I've come acrosss an error I've never seen and would appreciate some advice as to what the problem is or may be. I have tried restoring to another Volume on another filer and am experiencing the same problem.

The Tape Library I'm using to restore from is connected via Fibre to the Filers and is using HCART4 media.

Here is the issue. During the restore the the backup starts errroing out at different times during the restore. Sometimes I get 100 GB's restored and others I'm getting 200+. I've never gotten further than 300 GB's out of 1.6 TB.

Here is the error skipping the remainig bytes of inode 101

Then I get a scroll of errors saying
RESTORE: Find a chunk in inode 101. SKIPPING....

Then the restore terminates

My first thught was I have corrupted data on my tape but then I pulled another series of tapes a few weeks earlier with the same data and I'm getting the same error. Also my backup logs indicate the data backed up without issue.

As Always everyone's help is much appreciated.

in the link above, I don't believe there was an answered.  seemed a little bit ambigious.

one solution was to go to this link:  http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH179220

and to do:

Add the backup account in the following registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\VssAccessControl

Ok, I can do that, but here's the question.  how do you add the backup account into the registry?  what value do I put in?

Backup Exec 2012 and Storage Provisioning on Dell PowerVault

I need a solution

We are currently running BE 2010 on a Dell PowerVault DL2000. That server is physically attached to a Dell MD1000 storage array. Within Backup Exec, we have a Storage Provisioning license that allows Backup Exec to see and manage the external storage array.

As we attemtp to upgrade to Backup Exec 2012, we are running into problems with Storage Provisioning licensing. First, Symantec claims we don't even have a current license that allows to upgrade Storage Provisioning. This is clearly wrong, as I can provide them with a serial number and proof of purchase. What is more troubling, is that Symantec claims, via Dell, that the Storage Provisioning option is no longer supported in Backup Exec 2012, and they do not have an alternative solution.

My dillema is that since the 2012 upgrade installation sees a previous license for Storage Provisioning, it wants a new license (which Symantec won't get me). I can not complete the install without it. It gives me the option of going back an UN-installing my current Storage Provisioning option, but I am afraid Backup Exec will then no longer be able to see or configure my storage array if I do that.

Has anyone else experienced this or can provide any assistance?

Thanks

Netbackup Tape Inventory Problem

I need a solution

Hi All,

Our tape library was having a problem (HP ESL322E), then the engineer fixed the problem. After that I see "Media and Device Management" -> Media -> Robots -> TLD(1) the content is empty.

So what I did the "Invontory Robot" with the "Inventory operation" tick to "Update volume configuration" and start, it can do the  inventory for all the tapes in that tape library, but after I click OK. the content is still empty ( "Media and Device Management" -> Media -> Robots -> TLD(1) the content is empty)

So what it went wrong? Is it the tape library problem or the Netbackup Problem.

Thank you,

Iwan

Help Needed - Backup Design

I need a solution

Hi All,

I need some advice on a project I am currently given.

My client wanted to backup his data to tape. His data size is about 200TB which 160TB is MS Exchange, 10TB is SQL and 40TB of other files.

The number of servers is around 100 to 150. All Windows.

The backup window is 12 hours and nothing more and tape encryption is mandatory.

My client decision is to backup to LTO6 tape straight.

I know this is a tough requirement. So I actually suggested to backuup to disk first like NBU Appliance then to tape. I suggested 12 hours to disk and another 18 hours to tape whcih I also considered a tough design.

The client some how is open to this option but he still insists on a solution direct to tape first the the disk to disk to tape as a secondary solution.

Honestly speaking, I have never design such a huge backup before. So I am at a lost. I am already thinking just the numer of media servers alone can already create a server farm. I also do not know how much data a media server can process within an hour.

So can I have your suggestion and opinion on both solution?

Solution 1 - Direct to tape.

Solution 2 - Disk to Disk to tape.

Please let me know if you suggest like a 10Gb backup LAN, trunking FC etc. ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

We are using netbackup 7.5.0.5. I want to know is there a way to set up alerts for skip backup schedule in opscenter. Recently a full backup job was missed, we checked the policy and schedule setting, evrythings seems to be fine as it only happened for one policy. But need to know that if a schedule misses, then is there a way to generate alert from opscenter for skipped schedule.

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hi.

For info only.  Currently use SSR13 having upgraded from Ghost 15.  I had an issue this morning with some network drivers that required a complete system re-install of the OS.  So, booted into the SSR SRD only to find that it was frozen whilst trying to initialise the network (the very network where the drivers where corrupt). Solution, boot into the Ghost 15 SRD and re-install the OS from the Ghost SRD - worked a charm!

bpend_notify script design

I need a solution

I have bpend_notify script for solaris client.  I am setting following variable at the begining of the script.

BKUP_CLIENT=${1}

POLICY_ID=${2}

SCHED_NAME=${3}

SCHED_TYPE=${4}

BKUP_STAT=${5}

But, when the backup fails with error code  252 (no space left on target device), I am seeing BKUP_STAT variable assigned with 150. Why is it so?  Is 150 BACKUP status common for all backup failures in bpend_notify script. Can any one explain how to export accurate backup failure code into bpend_notify script for further processing ??

BackupExec - duplicate to Disk (automatic catalog)

$
0
0

When I select a Disk from "Backup Sets" and right-click "Duplicate to Tape"; many times the "backup set" will continue to show only the disk - but not show the tape under the "Storage" column. Sometimes it shows the tape copy as a new line (with a tape icon and expiry date etc); but often it does not appear automaticlly. In these cases support advises to run a "Catalog" (right click catalog) on the backup set with the disk-icon where the duplicate was done from. Then, after the catlog job has completed, the tape copy will appear as a new line in the "backup sets" display.

As a side note, the ctalog job is not visible at all while it is running, neither from the client where it was scheduled from (under backup sets); not on the MMS under "Jobs". When the catalog completes, the catalog job will show up on the MMS only (!) under "Job History".

Summary of enhancements:

1) duplicate jobs should not require a ctalog, but be reflected in the console automatically once they complete

2) catlogs jobs should show as running jobs on the MMS and on the client (currently they never show as queued or running)

3) catalog jobs should show on the client where it was started from under "Job History", not just on the MMS. Like this, there is zero chance to understand what is going on (jobs started do not show under "Jobs" nor under "Job Histoy".
